Apsáalooke (Crow)
Del Curfman grew up aware of the divides between his Apsáalooke (Crow Tribe of Montana) heritage and the greater Western/Montanan/Non-Native culture, forever influencing him and his artwork. Curfman is now based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He graduated from the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Studio Arts with an emphasis in painting and in Museum Studies in May 2017. Curfman looks to contribute to contemporary Native Artist history through his work in oil paints and community-based projects.
He known for his work with Apsaalooke’ (Crow Nation of Montana) imagery and cultural exploration. Curfman investigates heritage, tradition, and humanity through painting by incorporating techniques and styles of impressionism. With loose brushwork and semi-abstraction, he looks to capture the essence of nature in motion.
Del Curfman’s has had both exhibition and institutional recognition. In 2016 Rainmaker Gallery in Bristol, UK, hosted his first solo exhibition, which presented three distinctive series exploring Crow cultural heritage, runners, dancers, and historical photographs. Curfman’s pieces have been acquired by major museums, notably by the Field Museum in Chicago. His presence in the Neubauer Family Foundation and University of Chicago collections demonstrate his growing institutional significance.
